Malaysia extends visa waiver for Indian tourists to 2026: Tourism boost
The Malaysian government has announced the extension of visa waiver for Indian nationals to December 31, 2026. According to Home Ministry secretary-general Awang Alik Jeman, the move is in line with Malaysia's upcoming role as ASEAN chair in 2025 and preparations for the Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Earlier, in June, Malaysia extended the visa waiver for Chinese tourists to the end of 2026, following China's decision to allow visa-free entry to Malaysian tourists for up to 30 days starting next year. Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that China has extended the visa-free stay for Malaysian travellers from 15 to 30 days.
The visa waiver for Indian nationals comes six months after the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur announced a 30-day e-tourist visa fee waiver for Malaysians, valid for one year starting July 1, 2024. Malaysia's visa liberalisation initiative aims to boost economic growth and tourism while maintaining national security.
Malaysian High Commissioner to India Muzaffar Shah Mustapha noted a surge in Indian tourist arrivals, with over one million visitors recorded between January and November 2024, compared to 671,846 in 2023. He expects this growth to continue with a target of 1.1 million Indian tourists in 2025. The surge in Indian tourists is attributed to the visa waiver policy introduced in December 2023.
