Heavy rain and strong winds expected in 38 Thai provinces

 

 

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued alerts for heavy rain and strong winds in 38 provinces today due to a weak southwest monsoon and a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam. Residents are advised to take precautions as temperatures are forecast to drop tomorrow.

The weak southwest monsoon is affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, bringing thunderstorms and heavy rainfall to many areas. The northeastern provinces are particularly vulnerable to bad weather, including strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Wave conditions in the Andaman Sea are moderate, with waves around 1 meter high. However, waves in the Gulf of Thailand are generally low, less than 1 meter. In areas with thunderstorms, waves may exceed 1 meter, and the TMD advises sailors to avoid sailing in such conditions.

Unstable weather is expected to continue in upper Thailand and upper southern regions from tomorrow to October 3. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall in some places.

After this period, temperatures in the northeast region are forecast to drop by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius due to a moderate high pressure system or cold air mass coming from China, which is expected to spread over the eastern north, northeast and South China Sea. The monsoon trough will also pass through the northern, northeastern, central and eastern regions of Thailand.

In northern Thailand, about 30% of the area is likely to experience thunderstorms, especially in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun. Temperatures will be at a minimum of 23°C to 26°C and a maximum of 33°C to 36°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at a speed of 5 to 15 km/h.

In Northeast Thailand, 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, with strong winds and heavy rain in some parts, especially in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom. Minimum temperatures will be between 23°C and 26°C and maximum temperatures will be between 34°C and 36°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 15 km/h.

In Central Thailand, 30% of the area will experience thunderstorms, especially in Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon. Minimum temperatures will be between 24°C and 26°C and maximum temperatures will be between 33°C and 36°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 15 km/h.

In eastern Thailand, 40% of the area is forecast to experience thunderstorms, especially in Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. Minimum temperatures will be between 24°C and 27°C and maximum temperatures will be between 31°C and 35°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 30 km/h. In stormy areas, waves may exceed 1 meter high.

Thunderstorms are expected in 40% of the area on the east coast of southern Thailand, especially in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. Minimum temperatures will range from 24°C to 26°C and maximum temperatures will range from 33°C to 35°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 30 km/h. Waves may reach as high as 1 metre in areas with thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms are also expected in 40% of the area along the west coast of southern Thailand, mainly in Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun. Minimum temperatures will range from 24°C to 26°C and maximum temperatures will range from 32°C to 34°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at 15 to 30 km/h. Waves in the Andaman Sea may reach up to 1 metre and even higher in areas with thunderstorms.

Sri Lanka reintroduces e-Visa system with visa-free entry for 35 countries to boost tourism

 

Sri Lanka has brought back its online visa system after halting a controversial outsourcing deal. The country is now offering visa-free travel to people from 35 countries and continues to provide visas on arrival for others. These changes are part of Sri Lanka's plan to revive its tourism industry.

The Sri Lankan government announced that the online visa application (e-Visa) system is back on track. The decision comes after it cancelled a highly controversial outsourcing deal with a foreign group. The return of the online visa platform aims to make it easier for tourists to visit the country during its recovery from the economic crisis in 2022. Watch the video here

Why was the e-Visa system halted?

The online visa service was halted due to an expensive outsourcing contract awarded to a foreign group led by VFS Global, an Indian company. The deal, signed in April 2023, was criticised by rights groups for not being transparent. Critics were also concerned that the deal could allow the group to earn billions of dollars over the 16-year contract period.

Under the contract, travellers were required to pay a fee of $25 to process their visas. However, the government scrapped the deal and withdrew its in-house online visa system.

Visa-free entry to boost tourism

To attract more tourists, Sri Lanka is offering visa-free entry for citizens of 35 countries, including India, for six months from October 1, 2024. The government hopes this will attract more international visitors.

Sri Lanka launched a similar programme in 2023, offering free visas for major countries such as India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. That program expires in March 2024 but was successful, which is why Sri Lanka decided to extend it.

Visa on arrival for other countries

Sri Lanka offers visa on arrival for tourists from countries that are not part of the visa-free program. This makes it easier for all visitors to explore Sri Lanka's beautiful landscape, culture, and history.

With the return of the online visa service and the extension of visa-free entry, Sri Lanka hopes to welcome more tourists and continue its progress, especially in the tourism sector.

Thailand to introduce new ETA system for visa-exempt visitors

Thailand will introduce a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for travelers who do not require a visa. From December 2024, all visa-exempt visitors entering Thailand by air, land or sea will be required to obtain an ETA. This new system aims to enhance security and simplify entry procedures, with approvals typically granted within 24 hours.

What is an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs will introduce an ETA system for all visa-exempt foreign travelers. Although the ETA is not a visa, it will act as an automated security check, similar to the EU's ETIAS program for visitors to the Schengen zone. The system is designed to enhance security, prevent unauthorized immigration and monitor potential health risks. Once approved, travelers will receive confirmation of their entry status by email, typically within 24 hours.

Details on Thailand's 60-day visa waiver

As of July 2024, Thailand allows citizens of 93 countries to stay visa-free for 60 days, which can be extended to 90 days by visiting a Thai immigration office. Many travelers use "border runs," leaving Thailand for a while and then re-entering to reschedule their stay. With this option available, some travelers question the need for other visas, such as elite, retirement or family visas.

How ETA will be introduced

The ETA system will be introduced gradually from December 2024 to June 2025. The system will only apply to those who enter Thailand without a visa and will be free of charge. Travelers must apply for an ETA online at www.thaievisa.go.th, which will become the main portal for entry into Thailand.

Requirements and details yet to be confirmed

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet provided full details on the documents required for an ETA.

Possible entry limits and automated checks

It is unclear whether the ETA will impose limits on how many times travellers will be allowed to enter Thailand under the 60-day visa exemption. Previously, travellers were allowed to cross the border twice per year, but this rule was recently removed. The ETA system may trigger automated rejections to enforce entry limits without human intervention.

Exemptions and restrictions

Diplomats will not need an ETA to enter Thailand. However, unlike some other countries, there is no exemption for tourists over the age of 70.

How the ETA system will work

QR code entry: Travellers with an approved ETA can access the electronic gates by scanning a QR code from their authorisation email.

Security checks: The ETA system will verify passport details, check criminal records and cross-reference Interpol notices similar to current immigration procedures.

Faster processing: This new system aims to speed up entry procedures and reduce conflicts at immigration checkpoints.

Future considerations

As Thailand prepares to implement the ETA, some questions remain unanswered. It is not yet clear whether airline staff will have to check ETA approvals before passengers depart Thailand. Additionally, the ETA may be linked to Thailand's tax regulations for those staying 180 days or more in a year. Frequent visitors using visa exemptions or "destination Thailand visas" may be considered tax residents if they transfer money to Thailand.

DigiYatra expands to more airports in India: A new era of contactless air travel

The DigiYatra service, which uses facial recognition technology to streamline airport entry and security processes, has now been launched at nine more airports across India. The expansion was officially announced by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, marking a major step towards creating a completely digital travel experience across the country.

DigiYatra launches at nine new airports

On Friday, the DigiYatra service, a modern biometric system using facial recognition, was launched at nine new airports managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The technology is designed to make airport processes such as terminal entry and security checks faster and more efficient for passengers.

During a special event at the Visakhapatnam airport, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu launched the DigiYatra service. The virtual launch also expanded the facility to eight other AAI airports. This is a significant step towards furthering digital air travel for passengers across India.

Minister Naidu termed DigiYatra as a groundbreaking development in India’s civil aviation sector. He added that more than 30 million passengers have already benefited from this technology.

Launched at New Delhi, Bengaluru and Varanasi airports in December 2022, DigiYatra has gradually expanded to more airports across India. The system improves the overall travel experience by simplifying steps such as entry, security checks and boarding using facial recognition, making the process faster and paperless.

How DigiYatra Works

DigiYatra is a mobile-based platform where passengers can securely store their identity and travel details, allowing for a seamless journey through airports. The system enables self-bag drop and check-in using facial recognition, eliminating the need for frequent ID checks and physical documents.

Minister Naidu also shared the government's ambitious plans to expand India's aviation sector. Highlighting the efforts to modernise and expand airport infrastructure, he said, “India currently has 157 airports, and our aim is to increase this number to 400 in the coming years.”

With DigiYatra now operational at these nine additional airports, India continues to be a leader in integrating advanced technology into air travel, making the experience more convenient, safe and efficient for travellers across the country.

Malaysia implements refunds for long flight delays

From Monday, Malaysia will implement a new rule that requires airlines to refund passengers if their flight is delayed by five hours or more. The regulation, effective from September 9, 2025, aims to protect the rights of air travellers and is in line with similar policies in other countries that focus on improving customer service in the aviation industry.

Mandatory refunds for delays of more than five hours

From September 9, 2025, all airlines operating in Malaysia must refund passengers if their flight is delayed by five hours or more. Passengers who do not want to take a delayed flight and book another option instead can also claim a refund under the new rule. These changes are part of a broader effort to protect consumer rights amid rising complaints about flight disruptions and poor airline practices.

Global Efforts for Better Airline Service Standards

Transportation regulators around the world are tightening rules to hold airlines accountable for service quality. For example, Qantas Airways Ltd. in Australia faced a lawsuit for allegedly selling tickets for flights that had already been canceled. Similarly, the U.S. Department of Transportation recently required airlines to provide automatic refunds for canceled or significantly delayed flights, as complaints about refunds being denied have increased. Malaysia Airlines, the country's national carrier, has been hit particularly hard by these new rules due to ongoing engine problems with its Airbus SE A330 aircraft. The airline plans to cut its flight routes by December and will issue refunds via the original payment method under the new rules. Australia's Efforts for Better Consumer Protection Australia is also working on new measures to improve competition and strengthen passenger rights, including making the refund process easier. However, not everyone in the airline industry agrees with these changes. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson expressed concern that mandatory refunds for delays and cancellations could lead to higher ticket prices as airlines try to cover these additional costs. The Malaysian Transport Ministry has said that airlines not complying with these new rules could be fined up to 200,000 ringgit (about $46,000), with higher fines for repeated violations.
