The Ministry of Tourism and Sports plans to extend its compensation program for injured and deceased tourists until the end of the year. So far, only 3.9 million baht of the 50 million baht allocated for the program has been used.

Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanit said compensation has been granted in seven cases out of a total of 50 applications - four deaths and three injuries.

Currently, the program is active from January 1 to August 31, 2024. Minister Sermsak said the ministry will request an extension from the Comptroller and Auditor General's Department so that the remaining 46 million baht can be used until the end of the year.

If the extension is not approved, Mr. Sermsak noted that the ministry will request the Cabinet for an additional 50 million baht from the central budget to continue compensating tourists. The Tourism Ministry clarified that compensation is provided only for incidents that are not caused by negligence, illegal actions or risky behaviour of tourists.
