Indian travelers excited about visiting Europe this summer are encountering difficulties because of a surge in Schengen visa applications and a shortage of appointment slots. Recent data shows a significant 44% increase in Schengen visa applications from India last year, making it the second-highest in application growth, just behind China.
This shortage of available appointments is causing frustration for both travelers and travel agents. Many are dealing with cancelled trips and financial losses due to non-refundable bookings.
Visa processing firms like VFS Global highlight that embassies and consulates make the final visa decisions, which can vary in timing. They recommend that travelers plan their trips well in advance to avoid last-minute issues.
Most countries accept visa applications up to 90 days before the travel date, and with recent updates to the Schengen Visa Code, applications can now be submitted up to six months in advance.
Despite the appointment backlog, there is some positive news for Indian travelers. The European Commission has introduced new visa rules aimed at making it easier for Indian nationals to get long-term, multi-year Schengen visas. This new "visa cascade" system allows Indians to obtain multiple-entry Schengen visas valid for up to two years.
This change makes it easier for frequent travelers to move freely within the Schengen area, allowing them to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across 29 European countries.
